Stony Brook U. gets $150 million donation

  Eyewitness NewsSTONY BROOK (WABC) -- A $150 million gift to Stony Brook University on Long Island will be used to fund medical research, endow professors and recruit top students.

The amount is the largest gift in the school's history and the sixth-largest donation ever to a public university

The gift is from James and Marilyn Simons, and the Simons Foundation. James Simons is chairman of Renaissance Technologies.

Governor Andrew Cuomo was at the school to celebrate the gift and to announce a $35 million state grant.
