NEW YORK (WABC) -- The Food Bank for New York City provides food to 1,000 charities and schools throughout the five boroughs, but donations cannot keep up with the growing demand.
One and a half million New Yorkers rely on food pantries to make ends meet. But in the past year, there has been a 30 percent increase in need due to continued high unemployment, combined with a drop off in donations. This has left the pantries themselves struggling for survival.
The holiday season is a great time to donate. But before you collect the extra food at your house to give, consider that Food Bank for New York City actually gets more bang for the buck with a cash donation. Because they are the largest food bank in the county, they have tremendous buying power.
"You go into a grocery store, it would take you $3 to get us one can of soup," Food Bank CEO Margarette Purvis said. "Give us $3, we can actually provide 15 meals. It's a big difference."For every one dollar you donate, Food Bank can provide five meals. You can also donate online.
