Eyewitness NewsST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Forecasters say the chilly temperatures across Florida today will plummet into freezing weather tonight and into tomorrow.
Tampa may struggle to hit 30 degrees. Strawberry capitol Plant City is supposed to reach only 23 degrees. Northern counties will likely drop into the teens. Even South Florida will see cold temperatures in the 40s.
Strawberry farmers in central Florida will be up all night to turn on sprinklers to spray water on the tender fruit. The water will freeze and provide insulation.
Meanwhile, emergency officials are opening cold weather shelters for the homeless and other needy people who don't have heat in their homes.---
